Pi-Star is pretty awesome. He's got some key advantages that are great for people who arent die-hard Linux tinkerers...
File system is normall read-only - you can pull the power cord and nothing bad will happen.
Automatic updates to the Pi-Star software.
Web based config - no faffing about with VNC or SSH.
Particularly useful dashboard (for MMDVM... the Dashboard it presents for non MMDVM boards is more basic).
Very cool. It's about as close as you'll get to an openSPOT without owning an openSPOT i reckon - its much more of an 'appliance' than a tinkerers toy.
I'm running it on a Raspberry Pi 1 (original model B series 2), and it's a little slow but perfectly usable. On a Pi3 it flys along.
